The craft was started in England during the late 1800s. Clean simple designs and crafts aspects of nature that were the main features of this period of design. This new movement was in direct contrast with the mass production of products which was made possible by the industrial revolution. This new art (Art Nouveau in French) was also a relief of lavishly ornate designs of the Victorian era which preceded in many ways.
The industrial revolution has dehumanized in the manufacturing process, especially that refers to home decor products. He broke the process of working in several components by processes referred to as the "Division of labour". Workers could work on only one part of a complete product. The arts and Crafts movement was a refutation of this process dehumanizing referred specifically to the human element of a person who creates a complete product from beginning to end.
Architect Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) was one of the first leaders openly against the dehumanizing aspect of the industrial revolution. This was followed by other proponents of these ideas: John Ruskin (1819-1900), William Morris (1834-1896) and Phillip Webb. Morris was the most popular name associated with this movement.
This new style of art spread all over Europe and was appointed Art Nouveau (new art) by the French. Each country and each region had their own styles and variations of this new art movement.
During the late 19th century, America was basically import designs of artistic furniture and home to England and Europe. Colonial and shaker designs were the only truly American styles at that time. Simple and clean of Gustav Stickley furniture designs exemplified the style of Arts and crafts in America.
There were a number of companies in this period notable lamp. Their products are very collectible and highly sought after today. Many of these arts and crafts collectibles lights or lamps of Art Nouveau which sells for $15-$ 25 in the 1920s can now sell many $1, 000 and much more.
