Early this year, began a program of art in the KidsUp! Centre for children of parents on Bainbridge Island, WA. I started with the kinds of boats, based on the projects address every Tuesday afternoon. I found myself in a series of obstacles, a being that the afternoon was not an optimal time for younger children, then choose a profession to the ages of 0-6 was very difficult. However, parents seem to respond to the catchy titles and descriptions of projects and assistance was good for a new programme.
The project gave place to a project finished aesthetically pleasing and parents were happy. Unfortunately, while the children enjoyed a very simple projects (glue googly eyes on a pine cone), they were crushed by multiple addresses, combined with the opportunity to think creatively. He fought for the project and left the table as soon as they could. Not the vision I had for the development of a pre-school art program that would build a permanent platform to do and appreciate art as they learn fundamental skills such as coordination ojo-mano, creative and imaginative thinking and enjoying projects self-reflection.
In response, I started a workshop open - a table of clay or Play Doh, one for easels and paint, one for pastel collage and drawing oil. There are no addresses, minimal oversight, only a room dedicated to the exploration and materials. This is inspired by the idea of Reggio Emilia, a child must provide a stimulating environment and learning occurs independently as children explore without guidance or direction. World of Warcraft: the difference. Children were running in the study of art when they were ready to make art, choose the way I wanted to use, and on their own, decide it wanted to do. Often, the parents were relaxing out of the room and the children themselves who do not sit while a 15-minute art project spending 45 minutes to an hour and sculpture painting. When they are finished pieces, children not only entitled his works describing what had been done, but tell stories long, involved about the painting. Some children even paint in series. This was exactly what they do... was trying to build an enthusiasm for the art that would grow in the coming years, allowing children to find a peace quiet when sitting down with a paper and paint or clay and become adults that through all the busy, everyday panic relations can sit for a few minutes and escape to his imagination to focus its approach.
Then, why this latest work while the other was this fault (for children)? A preschool teacher told me the other day who had difficulties to help a child with an art project because they never knew what he was thinking of the child and when trying to help, the child is very upset because they were doing something that the child was not trying to make. Then, click. As adults, we would like to have a process that leads to a result. We try to classify and define things in an attempt to find a logical and efficient solution. When we provide projects for our children, we are giving them opportunities to learn, or we are teaching them something. Teaching is a method, so you only have meaning we return to the process = results. We want children to have an attractive result because as adults, it is how we judge success. However, success for children not is necessarily based on the results so they learn that the results are important. The success is achieving what was intended in their minds, not ours. Often it is not aesthetic us what is successful for them. But I believe that success in the art of preschool is achieved when the child feels that he has been a success because that is what creates the enthusiasm for the next project.
Do as adults, how guide us children with art, without directing them from their original intent? Click for me the other day when I was talking with the teacher of preschool. A moment later I had talked to her when I thought: "what is interfere with his art project?" Then I realized account that were really doing over one draft of the ship by which the child probably needs assistance with tools or methods to achieve the expected result. And if we are able, as adults, label pre-school projects such as art OR - not of Arts and crafts craft? We can make a specific distinction. Crafts are projects with exact instructions, which when followed will lead to a definite result. Crafts are important because we are taught to use the tools, follow the instructions, working with colors, develop the coordination of the hands of eye, etc.... These are things that we use in all aspects of life and the Foundation for making art. Art is an experience. The materials used for the exchange of views and ideas, basic and effective means of communication. Art allows the artist to interpret their environment while delving into the depths of imagination. Art is something that does not need assistance and is not based on a finished project.
These definitions in fact the address of my Art Center project and projects with my 4 year old son very clear. Some days we do crafts; Some days we do art. Craft will have themes and specific objectives; art will be completely hands off (adult), providing only material and create an atmosphere of peace. With a little luck, the craft will build skills that will grow the art. And, as father and teacher, I can take a deep breath and feel like I know what I'm doing for a change, which is what I think success for me.
